Road Hazard

Yikes!

Rush hour

Beware NZ drivers

I think we've seen a few trucks crossing- just like that.

Waihau Sunset

One of the nights we stayed in a little tiny town called Waihau Bay. "Wai", in the Maori language, means ocean or water. Waihau Bay means windy ocean bay - fortunately, it didn't live up to its name the day we were there. It did however, freeze the night we were there. The owners of the B&B, the evening before it froze, said it had never gotten cold enough to freeze in the 22 years they'd lived there. Hmmm This beach was just across the road from where we stayed.

Lake Tutira

The water doesn't usually come up onto the road here. It's hard to see in this photo, but there was also a lake on the other side of this road. That is usually a pasture - there's been so much rain this winter.

Waterfall

On our way around the cape we took a detour to see the eastern most tip of New Zealand. This is the first place on earth to see the sunrise each morning. The East Cape Lighthouse was too much of a trek for us on the very wet and windy day that we were there. This is a waterfall we saw on the road to the lighthouse.

Impromptu Lake

After a long, hot dry summer the winter rains arrived... and stayed....and stayed. Does make for the lovely green but also makes for lots of these little ponds.

Foggy Bay

East Cape Bay

Some more scenery along the road around the East Cape.

Beach Flowers in Napier

Napier, a town just to the north of us, has a lovely beach walk. These were some of the flowers we found in the dead of winter along the way.
